Why Be a Nurse

Nursing is a great profession, very much in demand today. If you look through the newspaper in any community, large or small, rural or urban, you see jobs for two things: truck drivers and nurses.

As a Nurse, you can take your skills wherever you want to go. There are nursing positions available throughout the United States as well as internationally for qualified people from every ethnic and religious background. And nursing isn't just confined to the hospital; You can practice in hundreds of settings To name a few:

You can also diversify into different areas of nursing practice: caring for children, adults, and the elderly, services for pregnant women and newborn infants, operating room, critical care and emergency departments, women's health and mental health. And there are many sub-specialty nursing areas such as sports injury nursing, cancer nursing, cardiac care, and newborn intensive care nursing

Nursing can also take you anywhere around the country and even around the world. You may choose to work in one permanent setting, or you may take short-term assignments as a travel nurse to fulfill temporary projects for nursing staff internationally. These temporary nursing assignments are prefect for people less tied down with family or other obligations, or anyone just wanting to see the world... on your own terms.

You can even serve in key government and elected positions, advocating for the health care needs of all people. Or you can choose to take advantage of ample continuing education opportunities, and become a nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, nurse educator, researcher, or a nurse manager. Nurses assist in creafting legislation makeing a real difference in how health care is administered in this country and around the world. As a nurse the sky is the limit. (and even that is surely changing)

But Really, Why become a nurse?

To put it bluntly, the current nursing shortage is now a crisis and is growing.  The average age of nurses is increaseing and schools cannot replace them quickly enough. The nation needs your help… so consider becoming a nurse! Why would you want to be a nurse? Here are some great reasons:

1)      Employment Opportunities- Currently, there is a shortage of 300,000 nurses worldwide. In the next 15-20 years, this number is estimated to increase to 800,000. With these numbers, finding a job right after school is no problem.

2)      Nurse Job Opportunities are Expanding- Nowadays; physicians are spending less and less time with the patients resulting with a bigger role for nurses. Nurses are now providing more direct care to patients than ever.

3)      Rewarding Job- There are few jobs out there that are as rewarding as being a nurse. Each day you will have a lasting impact on patients’ lives, and you might have the opportunity to save someone’s life. There is no reward greater than that.

4)      Great Income- Nurses only need two years in of training, and you can be off to becoming a nurse. With the current nurse deficit, finding a job right out of school shouldn’t be a problem. Right out of school, you could make more than $55,000 a year. As you gain experience, salaries quickly top $70,000 a year.

5)      Job Security- Nurses have one of the most secure jobs you can have. While a factory worker might get laid off, hospitals can’t afford to fire nurses. There will always be sick and diseased people in the world, so nurses will never become obsolete and the job can’t be sent off-shore. (Heloo, Tank you for calling dees hostpital.  I wheel be your nurse.  My name ees Bob Smith.)

6)      Great Schedule- If you want to avoid the typical 9-5 workday and spend more time with your kids, nursing provides very flexible schedules. If you want to work business hours, you can choose to work in a hospital or clinic. If you want to work in shifts, hospitals need nurses 24/7.

7)      Nursing Serves as a Platform- If you want to become a family physician or a cardiologist, nursing serve as a great stepping stone for your medical career. Having a nursing background will look great on resumes and help you find a job much easier.

8)       Variety- Unlike a lot of people think, there are many types of nurses out there. If you like to work with people, you can choose a hospital or a clinic. If you like children, you can work in a pediatrics ward or convalescent home.  Insurance companies, schools, parishes…. The possibilities are endless.

So there are tons of reasons to become a nurse.  If you think you’d love it, jump in… don’t lert any obstacles stand in your way.  Nursing is hard work though.  You need to be giving 100% of the time.  You often don’t get credit for healthcare successes.  But you help people.  You touch souls and change lives.  Why not jump on in and make a difference?
